N'attendez pas que votre perte auditive soit « assez grave »

Do not wait until your hearing loss is "severe enough"

By Rachel Trinker, Au.D., CCC-A, Head of Audiology at CLARIA

One of the most common misconceptions I hear as an audiologist is that hearing loss needs to become severe before it's worth doing something about it.

In reality, hearing difficulties do not need to reach a certain level to deserve your attention. When it comes to hearing health, early intervention often makes the transition to hearing aids easier.

Hearing changes are easy to miss

Hearing loss often develops gradually, which means the first signs can be subtle.

You might hear someone speaking, but miss certain words. Conversations become harder to follow once there is background noise. You find yourself asking people to repeat themselves or turning up the TV volume more often.

Sometimes the first sign isn't even "I can't hear." It's simply that listening takes more effort than it used to.

These changes are easy to brush aside, especially when you continue to get by just fine in most situations. But difficulties do not need to become overwhelming before you have your hearing evaluated.

Start by assessing your hearing

If you notice any changes, a hearing screening is a good place to start. It helps determine if hearing loss is present, its type and degree, as well as the most appropriate next steps.

Not all hearing difficulties require the same solution. Depending on the type and degree of hearing loss and your personal needs, recommendations may include communication strategies, hearing protection, hearing aids, or further medical examination.

The key is knowing where you stand.

Hearing aids are not just for severe hearing loss

Hearing aids are sometimes seen as being reserved for people with significant hearing loss. However, today there are hearing solutions designed for a wide variety of needs.

For adults who feel they have mild to moderate hearing loss, over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids have also opened up another path to treatment, without a prescription. Using hearing aids earlier helps regularly expose the brain to sounds it might otherwise no longer perceive. While hearing aids cannot prevent hearing loss from progressing over time, earlier intervention can help preserve speech understanding and facilitate adaptation to the devices: this is one of the reasons why acting early yields better long-term results.

Whatever option is chosen, the goal is not to wait until communication becomes extremely difficult. It is about finding the solution that allows you to continue participating in daily life, comfortably and with confidence.

Make hearing a preventive habit

We take preventive steps in many areas of our health. Hearing can be treated in the same way.

Be attentive to changes. Have your hearing checked as soon as something feels different. Protect the hearing you have. And if hearing loss is identified, learn about all the options suited to your personal hearing needs.

This National Wellness Month, don't judge your hearing health by asking, "Has it become bad enough?" Simply noticing a change and wanting to continue hearing well for years to come is enough of a reason to take action.
